Outreach

We have a team of experienced educacional software designers and programers. We have also developed an unique techonology that allows instructors to have embedded assessment in apps we develop, it means that students performance can be recorded while students perform tasks using our apps.

We also maintain channels used to give a broad access to the content we have developed and to the open courses we teach.

Educational Technology Museum for Science Teaching

Museums play an essential role in education, complementing formal and informal teaching. They inspire curiosity, promote lifelong learning and make knowledge accessible in an engaging way.

Pen drive:

It appeared in the year 2000, with the aim of replacing the floppy disk, recovering data from damaged computers, making backups more easily, and housing certain frequently used systems and applications.

However, the next step in the evolution of storage devices was cloud storage, which was one of the main causes of the pen drive falling into disuse

There are pen drives with biometric readers that only copy and store data after reading a part of the owner's body, that is, they use body parts as an identification mechanism. This type can store website passwords, bookmarks and more.

The pen drive was an instrument that made science teaching easier. Because it is a compact, small and, above all, resistant and durable material, it had several advantages over other storage resources.

Hard Disk:

The hard disk stores the operating system, applications and data files that the computer needs for its functions. The most "traditional" type of hard disk is the HDD.

Like many physical storage devices, the hard disk was also replaced by cloud storage, since it takes up no physical space at all.

In Biology teaching, the hard disk made it possible to keep files in the long term: lessons, course materials, photos, videos, etc. It worked as a filing cabinet for everything digital.

Video Cassette Recorder:

For the first time, viewers had total control over what to watch. The main function of the VCR was to record the programming of any channel being broadcast.

With the arrival of DVDs, VCRs became obsolete, and some time later the last manufacturer announced the end of production.

At the LTE, we have some cassette tapes with various lessons that were a great technological step in the study of Biochemistry.

Floppy Disk (Diskette):

The floppy disk is an obsolete removable data storage device used in computers. They stopped being produced on a large scale in the early 2000s, and were soon replaced by more robust storage tools, such as CDs, memory cards, pen drives and cloud storage.

For more than 20 years, the floppy disk was the most widely used recording device. And of course at the LTE it was no different: floppy disks were the main data transfer system between the computers in our computing environment.

Video Home System (VHS tape):

An analog video storage medium that uses a method of recording a magnetic signal on a plastic tape coated with iron oxide. In the 1990s, this technology was replaced by the DVD format. VHS distribution ended in Brazil in 2008 after its last distributor closed.

Because it could store video content relatively cheaply and easily, the VHS tape was widely used here at the LTE to store video lessons.

DVDs:

The DVD was created in the 1990s. The idea was to deliver greater storage capacity and video quality.

CDs and DVDs, which were widely used as data storage units in recent decades, are gradually losing popularity in modern society. With the increase in internet speed, many users now prefer to store their files in cloud storage services or on external storage devices, such as pen drives and SSDs.

In education, the DVD made it easier to train employees, professionals and students in technical and specific areas, with detailed tutorials and simulations. Here at the LTE we have many fascinating lessons recorded and archived on DVDs

BLU-RAY:

Blu-rays appeared in the late 1990s, when the topic was "high-definition video". At that time, before Blu-ray, there was no type of disc that could store such a large amount of content. The striking difference between it and the DVD is its immense storage capacity, a feature that made it an advanced replacement for the DVD itself.

The greater storage capacity and the superior sound and video quality were key features that made Blu-ray stand out among optical discs. And like the others, it was very successful in education, once again facilitating content, training and scientific research applications.

Transparent film for projectors:

A transparent projector film is a special material used in projectors to display images. It is made of a transparent material that allows the projector's light to pass through it, creating a visible image. These films were often used in various applications. Here are some key points about transparent film for projectors. Transparency allows light to pass through, which is essential for projection. Durability: it is resistant to tearing and damage, suitable for repeated use. It is used in educational settings, to project teaching materials. As at the LTE, for example, being one of the first signs of educational technology here in the laboratory, replacing what used to be only on paper.

Voltmeter:

Probably the oldest piece in our Museum.

Considered a measuring instrument used to measure the gain or loss of voltage between two different points of an electrical circuit, the voltmeter can perform the check on both direct current and alternating current equipment.

The voltmeter contributed significantly to education by providing a practical tool for measuring and understanding electrical voltage in circuits. It facilitates the learning of fundamental concepts of electricity and electronics, and stimulates students' interest in science. By integrating the use of the voltmeter into experiments and educational practices, students gain a deeper, hands-on understanding of the principles of electricity.

Coursera

We offer the Integrated Course Program on iOS App Development.

This Integrated Course Program covers the fundamentals of iOS development, including Swift programming, interface design, and implementing and publishing an app on the App Store. Advanced topics include data persistence, iOS frameworks, monetization and game development principles. In the Final Project, you will apply the skills you have acquired to create your own app, publish it on the App Store and track its usage.

The course is available at: https://www.coursera.org/specializations/desenvolvimento-aplicativos

BDC

Digital Library of Sciences

The BDC is a digital library that publishes digital educational material for science teaching at all levels. It is open to content submissions and has a peer review system and tools for user interaction.
